Fiber Laser Protective Window Keeps Burning? Check These 6 Causes
If a fiber laser protective window keeps burning, replacing the glass alone will rarely solve the problem.
A protective window separates valuable internal optics from dust, smoke, and cutting spatter. It is designed to be replaced during normal maintenance, but it should not burn repeatedly within a short period.
When the same problem returns after fitting a new window, one or more of the following conditions may be present:

A protective window that looks clean under normal workshop lighting may still show contamination when inspected under a bright lamp from different angles.

2. Oil, Moisture or Particles in the Assist-Gas Line
Clean assist gas is part of the optical protection system.
Compressor oil, condensed moisture, damaged filters or particles inside the gas line may produce a film or deposits in the lower section of the cutting head. A correctly installed window can therefore become contaminated again shortly after replacement.
Inspect:
- Gas filtration and drying equipment
- Compressor maintenance records
- Drain points
- Gas hoses and fittings
- Recently replaced filters
- Signs of oil or moisture inside the line
If several windows develop haze or small deposits on the same surface, investigate the gas supply before assuming that every window is defective.

Protective windows that look alike are not necessarily interchangeable.
Some cutting heads use different windows in the upper, middle and lower positions. These windows may have different dimensions, thicknesses or optical requirements.
A window with the wrong thickness may not sit correctly in the drawer. It may also affect how the seal is compressed when the drawer is closed.
Before ordering a replacement, confirm:
